How to Replace Window Panes

Replacement-Doors-300x200.jpgA damaged window pane can be an issue. This can be an opportunity to upgrade your windows to energy efficient or insulated ones, and reap benefits like increased comfort, increased resale values and lower utility costs.

You can do it yourself at a fraction of what it would cost to hire an expert. You'll only require the right tools and a few minutes of your time.

Glass

If your single pane windows are old damaged, cracked or deteriorating, replacing them with newer glass that is tempered or insulated will improve energy efficiency and reduce noise while maintaining the original character of older homes. The process of replacing the window pane is simple and can be done by anyone with basic hand tools. In addition to a replacement double glazing windows pane, the following components are required: latex glazing putty; pliers, glazier's points and a heat gun for warming the old putty, if needed. Wear safety glasses and gloves prior to beginning. Working with broken glass could result in serious injuries.

Remove any broken glass pieces remaining. It is best to use pliers for this however a flathead could work as well. Then, use a wood chisel, or putty knife, to remove the rest of the old putty from around the frame and the sash. Take your time and work slowly, taking care not to break the existing window sash. It is recommended to do this on a sturdy ladder rather than the ground and to place someone on the sash to help keep it steady.

Once you have removed all of the old putty, you can prepare the window frame to accommodate the new pane. To allow for seasonal expansion or contraction, subtract 1/8 inch each from the measurements of width and height. These measurements can be sent to a hardware or home center store to have cut a piece of glass that is in stock to the correct size. Alternately, you can cut the glass yourself, if you have the appropriate tools.

After putting in the new glass After installing the glass, apply caulking on the edges. This will make the glass weatherproof. Then install a glazier's point on the frame's opposite side to secure the pane in its place. The points shouldn't be too tight that they cause friction between the sash and the frame but they shouldn't be loose.

Before applying the putty to the surface, gently knead it until it is soft and free of lumps. Cut it into pencil-sized pieces. Place the first strip in the corner of the frame, working from one corner to the other so that it is smooth and even.

Glazier's Points

The glazier's points are small triangular pieces of metal which help to secure glass into the frame of a window without scratching or damaging the fragile surface. It's easy to learn how to use this secret tool, and you'll save money on the cost of an expert installation.

After removing the old putty, glazier points and any remnants, clean the frame thoroughly using a utility knife. Lightly sand the frame in the rabbet grooves, if necessary, to smooth out rough areas. If you do sand the wood, be sure to protect it with painter's tape to avoid accidental damage.

Note down the dimensions of the frame. These measurements can be brought to the hardware or home center store, and the new frame will be cut a bit smaller. This will ensure that the pane fits snugly and allows for expansion and replace window pane contraction.

Place the new window in the frame and press it into place firmly by using your hands. Then use the point of your chisel, or the back end of the putty knife to make a tap on the glazier's facets, as illustrated in Figure 11. The glazier's points should be in line with the top edge of your pane, and the shoulders raised should be just below that lip.

Apply a thin layer glazing compound on the rabbet grooves and the edges of the new glass. This will seal and protect the edges. Let it dry completely and cure.

Install the new window sash once the glazing compound has dried. First, saturate the wood with a thick coat of Linseed oil. This will prevent the new putty from taking in the moisture and drying out and cracking with time. Apply the coating using a brush this coat, or the tip of the putty blade. Then, use the chisel that is on the back of the tool or the back of the handle to gently smash the new sash or glazier's point into the grooves of the rabbet. Repeat this procedure every 10 inches along the perimeter of the frame.

Putty

A baseball thrown at you or a rock that is errant or a falling branch can cause a window pane to break or crack. Most windows can be replaced easily by installing a new piece. The glass is held in place with small clips made of metal called a glazier's point and putty, which is often called glazing compound. Before installing a new pane, first remove the old one and clean the area with a rag and an abrasive scraper that is a pull type or a wood chisel. Wear protective glasses and gloves while working. If the window is secured to the frame, you'll need to use a heat gun to soften the adhesive prior to taking it off.

If you're planning to replace Window pane your original sash, remove the molding that supports the old pane. Then sand the sash to ensure it's level and ready for new caulk. After the sash has been re-installed and sanded, apply a fresh silicone caulk around the glass to ensure it doesn't swell or fade as time passes.

Remove the glazing points from the rabbets. These are the grooves on the sash, which is where the glass is. If they're difficult to cut out, try holding a hand tool like a heat gun to soften them before you do. If you're using a heat gun, be careful not to damage the railings or sash by holding the tool too close.

Create the bed for your new pane after you have removed the old glaze and putty. Roll a rope of glazing compound between your hands, shaping it to be about 1/2-inch thick. Then, you can press it into the rabbets where the glass will sit. The glass must be positioned against the putty on both sides. If you need to gently tap your glass into the rabbet using your thumb.

If the new pane has a crack, you can cover it with a solvent-based glass glue or silicone caulk before pressing it into the sash. If the crack is not sealed, you will require putty to keep water from getting in. After the putty has dried remove the oily film from the glass and allow it to dry completely before painting. Paint after the putty has dried completely. It won't create a solid seal and may be leaking or discoloring over time.

Paint

You might be worried about replacing a damaged piece of glass. The truth is, replacing a single pane of glass doesn't have to be costly even if you do it your own. In fact windows with double panes can be replaced at a fraction of the cost of an expert.

First, if you are working on a large-sized window, ensure that it is securely fixed to the frame. This job can be done relatively easy and replace window pane fast using the appropriate tools and techniques.

When you're ready to start taking off the old window pane by removing the glazing points of metal that are connected to it. These are basically small metal triangles that function as "nails" which hold the window in in the wood frame. They are buried beneath a bead or glazing glue which hardens into an unbreakable wedge that holds the frame in place and hides the sharp edges.

After removing the old pane, clean the frame and the wood. Scrape off any old paint and sand the rabbet grooves that the glazing points were. Sand them to bare wood surfaces, so that you can paint the frames the same color. After sanding, apply a layer of flax oil to the wood's surface to prolong its life.

Next, measure the width of the window opening. You'll need to determine the horizontal and vertical dimensions of the entire opening, as well as the thickness. Subtract 1/8 inch from each measurement to ensure that you have the exact size for the new pane. This will allow for seasonal changes in the glass. You can bring these measurements to a hardware store or home improvement shop and have the glass cut for you.

Now, it's time to bed the new window pane. To do this, place the pane inside the frame and move it around until a 1/16 inch of putty remains between the edge of the glass and the sash on all four sides. Use a putty knife to smear the putty evenly, making sure that there isn't an excessive amount of excess putty in the corners and along the edges. When the putty dries, it can be painted with the same color as the frame to prevent water and air from leaking into the frame and causing fogging.
